Jacqueline Fernandez grew up in Bahrain, Manama. She is Sri Lankan and comes from a diverse ethnic background. Her father Elroy is a Sri Lankan (Catholic Sinhalese) and her mother, Kim is Malaysian. There are two older brothers as well as two younger brothers. Due to unrest in Lanka, her parents relocated to Bahrain in the early 1980s. When she finished her studies in Bahrain her family was granted an Scholarship to pursue a degree at Sydney's University of Sydney, where she earned a degree with a major in Media and Communications in Sydney, Australia. Passionate about languages and cultures inspired her to enroll in the Berlitz Language School, a school in which she improved on French and Arabic in addition to learning Spanish. In 2006, she was crowned the Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe 2006 in March 2006. She also participated in Miss Universe 2006. After winning Miss Sri Lanka in 2006 Padukone was able to begin her work in the world of television. She hosted the show Lanka Business Report which focused on business in Sri Lanka. Padukone is the daughter of the famous badminton player Prakash Padukone. She was raised in Bangalore and born in Copenhagen. She played badminton at the national championships while an teen, but she gave her sports career up to become a model. Padukone hails from Mangalore and her mother tongue is Konkani. Her family tree is rooted in Padukone village in Kundapura Taluk in the Udupi District of the state of Karnataka, India. Prakash Padukone was a badminton legend before retiring in the 80s. The mother of her daughter, who worked for a travel agency also comes from this village.
